12/31/2009- Structure Fire (A-shift)

Stations 1, 12, 19, 24 and 27 responded to a house fire at 267 Brittlebank Road Thursday afternoon, 31-December at 1508. On arrival Engine 19 found a doublewide mobile home with flames visible from two bedrooms on the “D” side of the trailer. Two crews entered the building, one attacked the fire with an 1-3/4 handline while the second searched for occupants. The first crew had the bulk of the fire knocked down in less 10 minutes.  Click here for more information.

 

12/27/2009- Shootings (C-shift)

Stations 1, 27 and Walterboro Public Safety responded to a shooting incident at 100 Sniders Highway at the Druid Hills Apartments Sunday afternoon 27-December at 1616. First arriving Firefighter-Paramedics found an 18 year old male limping in front of the “D” building complaining of being shot in the leg. The victim was treated at the scene for a single gunshot wound to the left thigh without an exit wound. Click here for more information. 

 

12/23/2009- Structure Fire (B-shift)

Stations 1, 19, 24 and 26 responded to a structure fire in a mechanics garage located at 301 Pansey Street at 0817, Wednesday morning 23-December. Engine 26 arrived to find the rear wall of the structure on fire, which had extended to pine straw on the roof of the building.  A single hand line was deployed and quickly knocked down the fire. 12/22/2009- Motor Vehicle Collision with Entrapment (A-shift)

Stations 1, 19, 26 and 27 responded to a high speed head-on collision between two vehicles in the 1000 block of Robertson Blvd near the bridge over Ireland Creek, Tuesday evening 22-December at 2054. The accident occurred in a curve. A west bound Toyota RAV4 collided with a Pontiac Bonneville trapping the driver of the Bonneville. Click here for additional information.

12/22/2009-

The Fallen Officer’s Golf Tournament will be held 14-Janaury-2010 at 10:30 at Plantation Course at Edisto, 19 Fairway Drive, Edisto Beach SC. The cost is $65.00 per player or $260 per team. All proceeds are to be donated to the Law Enforcement Memorial which is being built at the Colleton County Courthouse grounds. 12/21/2009- Motor Vehicle Collision with Entrapment (C-shift)

Stations 1, 5 and 19 responded to a two vehicle MVC in the 14800 block of Augusta Highway (SC Hwy 61) at 1205, Monday afternoon 21-December. A small Ford pickup truck and a tractor trailer log truck collided resulting in the log truck over-turning into the ditch on the right hand shoulder of the road. The load of cut pine trees broke free completely disintegrating the cab. The driver was pinned by his legs upside down in what was left of the cab. Click here for more info.

 

12/21/2009- Motor Vehicle Collision with Entrapment (B-shift)

Stations 1, 19 and 26 responded to a two vehicle MVC on I-95 at the 61 mile marker northbound at 0354, Monday morning 21-Dec. A north bound flatbed tractor trailer loaded with fencing materials struck the rear of an unoccupied disabled car in the break down lane. The truck lost control, slid sideways and overturned entering the woods. The load spilled as the over-turned cab plowed down multiple pine trees causing extensive damage to the truck. 12/16/2009- Pro-poly Tender Video

Daniel Owens, President of Pro-poly, was in Walterboro 16-December. Pro-poly manufactured the last 16 Tenders purchased by Colleton County. The Tender body is constructed of Polyprene plastic and is a fully intergraded wetside Tender. The units are designed and constructed at the Pro-poly facility in Ocala Florida, then shipped to Rock Hill, SC where they are mounted on the County supplied chassis by Seagrave Fire Apparatus. 12/18/2009- Station 5 Christmas Dinner

Station 5 held a Christmas Dinner at the Station, Saturday evening 18-December. Firefighters and their families attended and brought food. Captain Langdale fried two turkeys which were the main course. Following dinner, Mary Langdale showed a video recapping the year from calls run by the station. Capt. Langdale presented a plaque to Israel Hodges for 20 years of service to the department..... click here for more information.  

 

12/17/2009- Fire Prevention Contest Winner

Bryanna Rhoney won first place in Colleton County Fire–Rescue’s Fire Prevention coloring contest. The contest was offered to second grade students during Fire Prevention Month in October/November.  Byranna was presented a new bicycle and helmet during Mrs. Hiers’ class at Northside Elementary School. She is pictured with members of Colleton County Fire – Rescue and her mother. Click here for more information.  

 

12/15/2009- In Service Training

December In-Service Training was conducted by the SLED Bomb Team and was lead by Special Agent Ed Pumphrey. The three hour training class consisted of review of blast injuries and information being gathered from such injuries by the military related to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Pumphrey covered the dynamics of explosives and many types used by criminals/terrorist and their methods of operations. Click here for more information.

 

12/16/2009- Motor Vehicle Collision with Entrapment & Fire

Stations 1 and 27 responded to a single vehicle fatal MVC on I-95 at the 52-1/2 mile marker southbound, Wednesday afternoon 16-December at 1519. A 2008 Chevrolet extended cab pickup truck left the roadway at a high rate of speed. The truck entered the wooded median, struck several trees and caught fire. The 62 year old driver was heavily entrapped in the wreckage and was deceased. His wife received multiple trauma injuries and was found in the passenger seat of the heavily damaged vehicle. 12/13/2009- Shootings

Stations 26 and 27 responded to a shooting incident at the intersection of Rivers Street and Madison Street south of Walterboro, Sunday night 13-December at 2308. This was the second shooting incident to occur Sunday. Fire-Rescue was dispatched to a report of two people shot near the intersection of Rivers Street and Madison Street. Multiple 9-1-1 calls reported that several people were running from the scene. Click here for more information.

 

12/13/2009- Motor Vehicle Collision with Entrapment

Stations 1, 6, 19, 27 responded to a two vehicle MVC at the intersection of Green Pond Hwy and Ritter Road at 0928, Sunday morning 13-December. A Ford Pick-up Truck traveling southbound on Green Pond Hwy, collided with a west bound Suzuki Forenza, causing the pickup truck to leave the roadway and strike a tree head-on. The truck received heavy damage, trapping the driver. Two children riding in the cab also received traumatic injuries.... click here for more information.

 

12/13/2009- Structure Fire

Stations 5, 7, 17, 18, 19, 23 and 26 responded to a house fire at 2031 Sunrise Road east of Smoaks at 0427, Sunday morning 13-Dec. The homeowner stated she was awakened by fire in her bedroom. She alerted the seven other family members in the home, including four children. Everyone was able to exit the structure safely. The elderly woman attempted to extinguish the fire while a family member ran down the road to a neighbor’s house to notify 9-1-1. Click here for more information.

 

12/11/2009- SCFA Recruit School Graduation

Firefighter RJ Riles completed the seven week recruit school held at the SC Fire Academy. The graduation was held at the Denny Auditorium on the Academy grounds on 11-December. Fifteen recruits graduated as IFSAC Firefighter IIs. Twenty five candidates started the course 2 months ago. Click here for more information.

 

12/10/2009- Station 1 Christmas Party

Station Captain Charles Herndon presented service awards during Station # 1’s Christmas dinner which was held at Grillin and Chillin Thursday 10-December. Firefighter Tim Kinard received a five year service award and Firefighter RJ Riles was selected as Firefighter of the Year for Station # 1. Riles, who was graduating from the Fire Academy. 12/9/2009- Station 15 Christmas Party

Station 15 held their annual Christmas Dinner at the Station on Wednesday 9-Dec. Firefighter Jared Polk grilled steaks for the crew. The evening was capped with Station Captain Matt Williams and Fire Commission Chairman LaVern Polk awarding plaques to three Firefighters who were retiring from service. Mr. Kenneth Capers is retiring after 15 years of service, Firefighter Charles Polk is retiring after 27 years of service.... click here for more information.  

 

12/9/2009-

Our condolences go out to Engineer/Paramedic Paul Harrelson for the death of his father.  Please keep Engineer/Paramedic Harrelson and his family in your thoughts and prayers. The wake will be held at Herndon's Funeral Home in Varnville (Hampton County) from 1800-2000 on Thursday, December 10, 2009.  The funeral will be held at the same location on Friday, December 11, 2009 at 11:00.

 

12/7/2009- Station 23 Christmas Party

Station # 23 held it’s Christmas Dinner at Rizer’s Bar-B-Que Monday evening 7-Dec. The station members enjoyed a meal together in anticipation for the Christmas season. State Representative Bill Bowers was in attendance and praised the efforts of the State’s volunteer firefighters. Mr. Bowers and Fire Commissioner Doug Mixson Sr. presented a plaque to Firefighter Jeremy Sutton who was selected as Station 23’s Firefighter of the Year for 2009. 12/7/2009- Shooting

Station 19 responded to a shooting incident on Highland Ave near the intersection of Hampton Street at 1527 Monday 7-Dec. Sheriff’s Deputies located a stolen vehicle behind a closed business on Hampton Street and discovered a 78 year old female in the trunk. The woman had been shot twice. She was conscious and alert. Firefighter-Paramedics from Medic 19 treated her at the scene and transported her to the helipad at Colleton Medical Center. Click here for more information. 

 

12/6/2009- Two-Alarm Structure Fire

Stations 3, 4, 7, 18, 19, 23 and 26 responded to a commercial structure fire at the P and D Grocery Store located at 27499 Lowcountry Hwy in the Town of Smoaks, Sunday morning 6-December at 0420. Engine 18 arrived to find heavy fire conditions inside the structure and the roof at the rear of the building had already collapsed, indicating the fire had been burning for quite some time before it was reported. Flames were shooting 20 feet into the early morning sky. Click here for more information.  

 

12/5/2009- Shop with Santa's Heroes

Colleton County Fire-Rescue was invited to assist with the “Shop with Santa’s Heroes” this year. Six Fire-Rescue employees participated along with twenty-five members of the various Law Enforcement agencies and Walterboro Firefighters to help out the Foster Children in the County. Twenty one children attended the event which was coordinated by Angela Stallings of the Walterboro Public Safety Department. Click here for more information.
