27/August - 31/August/2023 - Hurricane Idalia

Fire-Rescue and its Emergency Support Function Partner Agencies prepared and responded to the effects of Hurricane Idalia. Beginning Sunday 27-August, agencies began monitoring the progress of the fast moving hurricane as it developed in the Gulf of Mexico. It became apparent the storm's path would pass over SC and become a statewide event with high winds and heavy rains. The County's Emergency Operations Center was activated Tuesday and staffed throughout the storm. Click here for addittional information.
30/August/2023 - Aircraft Emergency - "C" Shift

A twin engine plane struck a deer while landing on runway 23 at the Lowcountry Regional Airport Wednesday morning 30-August. Fire-Rescue was notified at 03:00. Engine 1 and Medic 1 arrived a short time later to find the plane disabled on the runway. The impact with the deer caused the front landing gear to collapse. The nose dropped and the propellers on both engines struck the runway damaging the propellers and engines.  Neither of the two occupants on the plane received any injuries. 30/August/2023 - Structure Fire - "A" Shift

Fire-Rescue responded to 49 Heavy Feather Ln for the third time in as many months for a structure fire. The incident occurred on Monday morning 30-August at 01:28. A neighbor on an adjacent street reported seeing the building ablaze. Engine 9 arrived to find the single wide mobile home fully involved. A portion of the mobile home had burned on 13-July causing heavy damage to the residence. It was vacant at the time and the building had no power in July or during this response. We offer condolences to Deputy Fire Marshal Roger Johnston Jr., and his family on the passing of his mother, Mrs. Soraya A. Johnston who passed away on 29- August. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 2, 2023 10:30 AM at Bryant Funeral Home in St. George. Please keep the Johnston family in your prayers. The full obituary can be found here.
28/August/2023 - Birth Announcement

We congratulate Firefighter Blake Drew and his wife Evelyn on the birth of their son Hudson Michael Drew. Hudson was born 25-August at 07:52. He weighs 7 pounds 14 ounces and is 20.5 inches tall. Both Hudson and his mom are doing fine. Blake is a third generation firefighter. Click here for additional information.
27/August/2023 - MVC with Air Evac - "C" Shift

An adult male received critical injuries when his motorcycle collided with another vehicle on SC Hwy 174 at Flowers Dr on Edisto Island Sunday afternoon 27-August at 16:12. The man was in critical condition at the scene and was treated by Colleton Firefighter-Paramedics, Edisto Beach and St. Pauls Fire Firefighters. A medical helicopter was requested and CARE Flight responded to the Edisto Driving Range not far from the scene. The patient required advanced airway care prior to transport and was then flown to a Charleston Trauma Center. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. 24/August/2023 - Structure Fire - "B" Shift

Fire-Rescue responded to a structure fire at 1078 Stokes Road at 17:18 Thursday afternoon 24-August. Engine 26 arrived to find a double wide mobile home with flames visible from the southend of the building, extending above the roof. Firefighter-Paramedics deployed multiple handlines to the building and quickly knocked down the flames. The fire had spread to the void space above the living area and extended to the opposite end of the mobile home. Firefighters had to pull the ceilings in most of the residence to reach the fire below the roof. The home had a new metal roof installed over the old shingle roof. Click here for more information.
24/August/2023 - Medical Air Evac - "B" Shift

An adult male suffered a medical emergency at a residence in the 8800 block of Lowcountry Hwy. (US Hwy 21) south of Sniders Crossroads Thursday afternoon 24-August at 14:36. Firefighter-Paramedics from Station 18 responded and treated the man at the scene. It was discovered he was suffering a STEMI and CARE Flight was requested due to the distance to the closest Cath Lab. The man was transported to a nearby field on Cane Branch Road and Medic 18 met with CARE Flight. The CATH Lab was notified and the patient was flown to Trident Medical Center. Click here for additional information.
24/August/2023 - Structure Fire - "B" Shift

A home suffered heavy damage in an afternoon fire at 1377 Barracada Road east of Walterboro, Thursday 24-August. At 14:04, Fire-Rescue was dispatched to the location for a reported grease fire. Engine 19 arrived to find a double wide mobile home approximately 70% involved. The roof in the center of the building had already collapsed and fire was running the roof of the entire structure. A 38 year old male was in the yard and suffered non-life threatening second degree burns to his hand. Firefighter-Paramedics from Medic 1 treated him at the scene, then transported the man to Colleton Medical Center. Click here for more information.
23/August/2023 - Fatal MVC, Auto vs Dirt Bike - "C" Shift

An adult male died from injuries he received while riding a small dirt bike in the 8200 block of Ritter Road at 00:04 Wednesday morning 23-August. The man was riding the dirt bike eastbound on the dark rural section of roadway when it was struck from behind by an eastbound Honda Odyssey minivan. The dirt bike had no lights. The man was ejected from the dirt bike and suffered multiple traumatic injuries. The bike became impaled in the front of the minivan. The driver of the minivan was not injured. Callers to 9-1-1 reported the dirt bike driver was not breathing. Click here for additional information.
19&20/August/2023 - School Bus Extrication Class

A dozen Colleton Firefighter-Paramedics participated in a two day school bus extrication course held in Colleton County over the weekend. The course was conducted at the Colleton School Bus Maintenance Shop on Old Air Base Road. The shop and Director Richard Holt were very accommodating, providing three old buses for the students to use. School buses present many different challenges during auto extrications due to the very different and sturdy construction. Buses are more stout than standard automobiles in an effort to protect their precious occupants. Click here for additional information.
19/August/2023 - Shooting Incidents - "B" and "C" Shifts

An adult male intentionally shot himself in both legs Saturday morning 19-August near the Edisto Motel in the 17000 block of ACE Basin Parkway in Jacksonboro at 03:48. The man suffered two gunshot injuries and was treated at the scene by Fire-Rescue Medic 6. He was transported emergent to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The Colleton County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.  Click here for additional information.
19/August/2023 -  Shooting Incident - "B " Shift 

An adult male received a gunshot wound at a residence located in the 100 block of Glover Street at 02:43 Saturday morning 19-August. Walterboro Police secured the scene and Firefighter-Paramedics found the man inside the home with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was treated at the scene for his injuries and medications were administered. No medical helicopters were immediately available. Fire-Rescue Medic 1 transported the man emergent to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston. 17/August/23 - Ireland Creek Flooding Event - A, B and C Shifts

A thunderstorm that occurred over northern Colleton County on Wednesday night produced significant flooding along Ireland Creek on Thursday and Friday last week.  Colleton County Fire-Rescue monitored the thunderstorm as it occurred and collaborated with the National Weather Service-Charleston (NWS-Chas) Office throughout the event.  NWS-Chas advised a storm spotter on Burlington Road in the vicinity of Jefferies Hwy recorded 8.37 inches of rain in about four hours.  That heavy rainfall created standing water on Jefferies Hwy in the vicinity of Cottonwood Lane and caused Ireland Creek to rise almost 4.5 feet in a short period of time.  Click here for additional information.
14/August/2023 - High Speed MVC - "A" Shift

Seven people were injured when a full sized van overturned on I-95 near the 49 mile marker southbound Monday afternoon 14-August at 14:21. It appeared the southbound van dropped off of the roadway and overcorrected causing the vehicle to flip on its side. Seven people inside the van suffered various injuries. Medic 1 requested one additional Fire-Rescue ambulance to assist with the number of injured people. Click here for additional information.
11/August/2023 - Commercial Building Fire - "C" Shift 

A building fire on Sidneys Road was quickly contained on Friday morning 11-August.  At 05:06, Fire-Rescue units were dispatched to a structure fire at 1941 Sidneys Rd, Walterboro (Northside Pak a Sak).  The first engine arrived less than five minutes later to find smoke showing from the exterior.  Crews entered the building and were able to quickly bring the fire under control using portable extinguishers.  The fire was confined to the kitchen area and damage was limited.  Crews were on scene for almost an hour performing ventilation, overhaul, and ensuring the building was safe.  There were no injuries.  Click here for additional information.
07/August/2023 - CCSO Communication Sergeant Christy Worley

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of 9-1-1 Telecommunicator Sergeant Christy Worley. Sergeant Worley lost her battle with cancer Thursday evening 03-August at Summerville Community Hospice House. She was 44 years old. Sgt. Worley served as a Colleton County 9-1-1 Dispatcher for 19 years. She has been termed the Angel of the Airwaves. She will be missed. 04/August/2023 - MVC with Entrapment - "C" Shift 

An adult male was critically injured in a single vehicle, high speed MVC in 13000 block of Cottageville Highway (US Hwy 17-A) near Indian Oaks Lane east of Cottageville, Friday afternoon 04-August at 19:56. The southbound Ford van which was towing a trailer, left the roadway and struck several trees. The van received heavy damage in the collision, crushing the cab and overturned. The unrestrained adult male driver was partially ejected and was trapped in the wreckage. Firefighter-Paramedics stabilized the van and used Holmatro Rescue tools to extricate the driver.  Click here for additional information.
