7/31/2010-
Multiple Structure Fires (C-shift)
Stations 5, 9, 19 and 26 responded to two mobile homes and a work shop on fire at 381 Cardinal Lane at 1111 Saturday morning 31-July. The fire is believed to have been intentional set. It is unclear if both mobile homes were set or if the fire spread to the second structure. The work shop was located behind the second mobile home and received extensive damage. 7/28/2010-
Motor Vehicle Collision with Ejection (C-shift)
Stations 1, 7, 18 and 26 responded to a high speed single vehicle MVC on Lowcountry Hwy (US Hwy 21) at Brady Lane near the Bamberg County Line Wednesday evening 28-July at 2150. The northbound vehicle left the roadway at a high rate of speed, over-turning several times. Engine 7 arrived to find the vehicle upright on Brady Lane. The three Hispanic male occupants were found outside the vehicle with various traumatic injuries consistent with ejection. Click here for additional information. |

7/28/2010- SWAT Training at Station 6 (C-shift)
On Wednesday, July 28th, the CCSO utilized station 6 to conduct SWAT training. The dynamics and the layout of the station presented many challenges to the officers. Station 6 is the only two story fire station in Colleton county and offers several rooms, closets with large and smaller rooms as well as two separate apparatus bays for a “suspect” to hide from pursuing officers. Structure Fire (B-shift)
Stations 1, 4, 8, 22 and 29 responded to a structure fire at 2218 Cavanaugh Road Wednesday morning 28-July at 0023. The caller reported the fire could be seen from the road, but was located a substantial distance from the roadway. Engine 8 arrived to find a locked gate across the driveway. Firefighters used bolt cutters to access the property. Once at the scene, Engine 8 found a single family dwelling that was fully involved and had already collapsed... click here for additional information.

7/27/2010- Congratulations to Fire Marshal Richard Sheffield and his wife on the birth of their daughter, born this evening at 20:41, weighing 5 lb. 14 oz. and 19&1/4 inches long. |

Shooting Incident (B-shift)
Station 18 responded to a double shooting at 1223 Homestead Drive Sunday morning 25-July, at 0513. Sheriff’s Deputies and Firefighter-Paramedics found one woman dead at the scene and an adult male with critical gunshot injuries to the face. Crews worked diligently to control the bleeding and secure the man’s airway. Click here for additional information.

Fatal MVC with Air Evacuation (B-shift)
Run # 10-04036 - Colleton County Fire-Rescue responded to a fatal single vehicle MVC on I-95 at the 49mm southbound, Saturday afternoon 24-July at 1751. According to a witness, the large motor-home was traveling southbound when it suffered a tire blow out, which caused the driver to lose control. The motor-home entered the median, striking several trees and caught fire. Click here for additional information.

7/24/2010- Announcement from Chief McRoy I am pleased to
announce the promotion of Firefighter-Paramedic Ben Heape to the “B” shift
Battalion Chief’s position. Heape was selected from several very qualified
applicants and will begin his duties in this new role next week. He is filling
a vacancy due to B/C Sheffield assuming the duties of County Fire Marshal.

Motor Vehicle Collision with Air Evacuation (A-shift)
Stations 9 and 19 responded to a two vehicle MVC on Cottageville Hwy at the intersection of Burr Hill Road Friday afternoon 23-July at 1718. According to witnesses, a southbound Ford Expedition turned into the path of a northbound UPS delivery truck. The Expedition was thrown to the right hand shoulder of Burr Hill Road injuring several people in the SUV. Click here for additional information.

Motor Vehicle Collision with Entrapment (A-shift)
Station 1 responded to a single vehicle accident on Ivanhoe Road near South Jefferies Blvd, Friday afternoon 23-July at 1617. A newer model Chevrolet Pickup Truck left the roadway and went down a small embankment striking a large oak tree head on. The truck received heavy damage. The female driver ,who was wearing a seatbelt, was trapped inside the damaged truck. Click here for more information..

7/23/2010- Memorial arrangements for Station 1 Firefighter and Walterboro Public Safety Officer Paul Potts have been announced. The visitation will occur at Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home at 117 Paul Street in Walterboro from 1800 to 2000 tonight (7/23). The funeral will be held Saturday, July 24 at 11:00 at First Baptist Church on the corner of Memorial Street and Hampton Street in Walterboro. All Firefighters will serve as honorary pallbearers and are asked to assemble in front of the church at 10:30. There will be no graveside service. A reception will be held following the funeral at the Elks Lodge on Milestone Lane in Walterboro at 12:30. Everyone is invited to attend. |

Motor Vehicle Collision with Entrapment (C-shift)
Stations 1 and 6 responded to a two car MVC in the 13000 block of Green Pond Highway (SC hwy 303) just north of ACE Basin Parkway (US Hwy 17) Monday afternoon 19-July at 1400. A northbound small Honda collided with a northbound full size Ford pickup truck and overturned. Two adults and an infant were trapped in the wreckage. Click here for more information.

Motor Vehicle Collision with Air Evacuation (C-shift)
Station 9 responded to a high speed single vehicle MVC on Sidneys Road at the intersection of Rising Stage Lane, Monday 19-July at 1101. The location of the accident is near the Edisto River at the Dorchester County line. Apparently a southbound Ford pickup truck veered off of the right hand shoulder and lost control after coming back on the roadway. Click here for additional information.

Motor Vehicle Collision with Air Evacuation (B-shift)
Station 19 responded to a moped vs car accident at the intersection of Sidneys Road and Industrial Road Sunday afternoon 18-July at 1326. The moped ran into the back of a Honda Odyssey mini-van causing the moped driver to fall into the roadway. The patient received multiple trauma injuries including a head injury. Motor Vehicle Collision with Entrapment (A-shift)
Stations 1, 2, 6 and 19 responded to a high speed single vehicle MVC on Charleston Highway (SC Hwy 64) approximately ½ mile west of Jacksonboro Road Sunday morning 18-July at 0017. The 2002 Mazda failed to negotiate a curve, struck an embankment, then lost control and over turned in the center of Charleston Highway. Click here for additional information.

Motor Vehicle Collision with Ejection (A-shift)
Station 9 responded to a high speed single vehicle MVC on Augusta Highway at the intersection of Omega Lane, Saturday afternoon 17-July at 1903. An east bound Scion left the roadway at a high rate of speed and struck a drive culvert. The car became airborne for 136 feet before it nose dived on the shoulder of the road. 7/16/2010- There are a few seats available in the pre-requisite classes as part of the recruit school beginning in August in order to meet the newly mandated firefighter standards. The classes available are 2722- Hazardous Materials Operations (August 9, 11, and 12 from 0800-1700), 1136- Flammable Liquids and Gas Firefighting (August 17 from 0800-1700), and 3330- Auto Extrication (August 18 and 20 from 0800-1700). If you are interested in attending any of these classes, please contact the training division (538-6849) immediately. Applications must be completed and sent to the training division by 1700 on Wednesday, July 21. Available seating is extremely limited and will be addressed on a first come, first served basis. |

Motor Vehicle Collision with Entrapment (A-shift)
Stations 1 and 19 responded to a vehicle accident in the 2800 block of Charleston Highway just east of Smoak Road Wednesday afternoon 14-July at 1441. An east bound Toyota Corolla left the roadway, struck an embankment and several trees before it roll onto its side in the ditch. The female driver received only minor injuries and was able to self extricate with assistance. Click here for additional information.

Structure Fire (A-shift)
Stations 1, 2, 6, 8, 12, 21, 22, 25 and 27 responded to a house fire at 1015 Turkey Hill Road Wednesday afternoon 14-July at 1233. Engine 6, Tender 6 and Medic 6 arrived to find heavy smoke conditions coming from the doublewide mobile home. The structure had several additions and was located behind another structure which caused some access difficulties for apparatus. Click here for additional information.

7/11/2010- Chief Tony Dicks of the Barnwell Fire Department has notified us of the passing of David Holcomb’s father. He died after a battle with Cancer. David Holcomb is one of the ISO Field Representatives in South Carolina. He also serves as Fire Chief of the Mack Edisto Fire Department located in Lexington County. Holcomb began his fire service career in Barnwell. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6 till 8 at Mole Funeral Home in Barnwell. Services will be Tuesday afternoon at 5 PM at the Holy Apostles Episcopal Church of Barnwell with graveside afterwards. Members of the Barnwell Fire Department will act as Honorary Pallbearers. All fire service personnel are invited to join with us on Tuesday in uniform if you can. |

Stations 1, 19, 24, 26 and 27 responded to a house fire at 237 Red Comet Road Saturday afternoon 10-July, at 1800. Engine 1 arrived to find heavy smoke conditions in the single story wood frame dwelling, with fire coming from windows on the “B” side side and the front of the structure. Stations 9 and 11 responded to a single vehicle high speed MVC in the 25000 block of Augusta Highway just west of Huckleberry Hill Lane, Saturday morning 10-July at 0327. The 35 year old driver was not wearing a seatbelt. He failed to negotiate a curve, went down an embankment causing the small pickup truck to flip over several times... click here for additional information.

MVC with Entrapment & Air Evacuation (B-shift)
Stations 1 and 26 responded to a high speed single vehicle MVC on I-95 at the 52 mile marker northbound, Friday afternoon 9-July at 1758. Witnesses stated the 1996 Plymouth Voyager Mini-van suffered a rear tire blown out. The 64 year old female driver lost control of the vehicle, crossed both lanes of traffic and entered the median backwards. Click here for more information.

7/6/2010- Shooting Incident (B-shift)
Stations 1 and 26 responded to a double shooting incident at 1122 Sniders Hwy at the Kangaroo Gas Station Tuesday evening 6-July at 2212. Rescue 1, Medic 1 and Battalion 1 initially responded to a man down with a gunshot wound to the chest. The 19 year old man was found lying on the side of the road east of the Kangaroo Store. 7/6/2010- Tactical Response Team Training (B-shift)
The Tactical Response Team trained on high angle rescue using the drill tower at Station 19. Personnel were able to practice patient pickoffs from a balcony and out of a window of the drill tower. Personnel also trained on descending to patients while inverted. Engineer/Paramedic Brian Rowe served as the instructor for the class. Click here for more information.

Structure Fire (C-shift)
Stations 1, 6, 8 and 25 responded to a storage building fire behind 456 Public Landing Lane south of the Jonesville Community, Sunday afternoon 4-July at 5:06 PM. Engine 8 arrived to find a 15 by 20 foot storage building well involved. Two other structures were threatened and received damage from the intense heat. Firefighters deployed one 1-3/4 handline to combat the fire. Click here for additional information.

Commendation for Life Saving Awards
On Thursday evening 1-July, Fire-Rescue Commission Chairman Lavern Polk presented four Fire-Rescue personnel Commendations for Life Saving. These commendations were awarded as a result of performance at an incident where personnel found a pediatric patient in cardiopulmonary arrest. Personnel spent only five minutes at the scene and the transport time was only six minutes. Click here for additional information.
